Tubal Ligation Reversal
What is Tubal Ligation Reversal?
Tubal Ligation is a procedure that is commonly known as getting one’s “tubes tied”, and it serves as an extremely effective form of birth control. The procedure can be performed in the following ways: the fallopian tubes are tied, the tubes are sealed together or the tubes are burned together. When women want to reverse the procedure, they go through a surgery that is known as Tubal Ligation Reversal.
It turns out that some women change their mind about not wanting to have a child or having more children, so tubal ligation reversal is an option available for women who are ready for childbirth. It is okay to change your mind and it is actually not that uncommon, because what may seem right at the time may change due to our perspective, circumstances or fortunes.
To reverse the procedure, the surgeon will try to undo what was done in the initial tubal ligation surgery. Depending on the patient’s age and condition, the doctor will determine whether this treatment is possible or appropriate. It is important to remember reversing the procedure does not guarantee an easy pathway to pregnancy, and frequently women will need to seek out additional fertility treatments.
Who is a Good Candidate For Tubal Ligation Reversal?
The doctor will look at a number of factors to determine if the tubal ligation reversal procedure is appropriate for you. Due to the sensitive nature of this decision, it is not a bad idea to get a second and third opinion to make sure you are receiving the best medical advice available. The following are some basic factors a doctor looks at before deciding whether or not ligation reversal is the correct choice for the particular patient, because doctors do not want to perform procedures that are not helpful and/or risky.
- Patient’s Age
- Tubal Ligation Procedure Performed on the Patient in Past
- Current Health of Fallopian Tubes
- Scar Tissue in the Pelvic Area
- Fertility Tests (including test of partner’s sperm)
What is the Surgery Like?
You will go to a hospital or outpatient center to get the tubal reversal ligation preformed by a surgeon. The surgery takes around 3 hours to perform. This is a procedure that requires anesthesia, so that means you will be asleep and feel nothing during the operation.
The surgeon performs the surgery by going through the belly button into the pelvis area with a small scope, called a laparoscope. Once the surgeon does this they will know exactly what they need to or if they can perform the reversal surgery. After this the surgeon makes two small cuts near the pubic hair line. They use microscopic tools to remove the clips or rings that blocked the tubes. If they need to reconnect the tubes, they will make small stitches to re-attach the tubes.
Usually once the procedure is done, you will need to stay in the hospital for at least one night. Some hospitals with advanced equipment even let women go home the same day a few hours after the procedure is performed. Even though all surgeries are serious, this one is relatively low risk and has a quick recovery. There is some discomfort after the surgery, but you will be given pain killers that can mostly manage the pain.
